Bob Lindquist turned a one time hobby into a full-time job when armed with a small bank loan he established Qupe Vineyards at Santa Maria in Santa Barbara Country. Today he produces 20,000 cases a year. Qupe is dedicated to producing handcrafted Rhone varietals from California’s Central Coast. They employ traditional winemaking techniques to make wines that are true to type and speak of their vineyard sources. Their goal is to make wines with impeccable balance that can be enjoyed in their youth, yet because of the good acidity from cool vineyard sites can also benefit from ageing.

This massive coastal appellation encompasses vineyards from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Which all enjoy cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. The Central Coast is home to a rich diversity of grape varieties, also to both the smallest of boutique wineries and some of California’s biggest players. Of the close to 100,000 acres under vine in the region, more than half are planted to white wine grapes. Chardonnay boasts the most territory under vine, but Rhone varietals are emerging as the new darlings of Central Coast viticulture.
